community treks



2009-10 STRATEGIC GOALS: Community Treks will focus efforts within the villages of Mtslitsa, and Chiwengo Malawi, continuing to evaluate the village needs and focus on:

1. Education

a. Teacher training and evaluation – “train the trainer” concept.
b. Raise funds for the provision of scholarships.
c. Evaluate need and feasibility of starting a school for high school age students.

2. Health

a. Develop a sustainable network of clinical care by establishing an ongoing rotation of caregivers.
b. Evaluate building/owning/renting space for a clinic.
c. Provide church leadership with training to care for individuals with AIDS in the community.
d. Raise funds for the “10” Campaign. Ten dollars will test, evaluate and treat an individual with AIDS.
e. Training in natural resources, nutrition, agriculture and clean water.

3. Faith

a. Provide a week-long training event for village church leaders empowering them to:

i. teach others about the prevention of HIV/AIDs and the provision of compassionate care for those living with the disease.
ii. administer finances for their churches and to begin a small business.
iii. teach the Bible to others.

b. Invest in a shared planting of maize by village pastors so that they may feed their families and set aside the funds needed to rent fields and purchase seed and fertilizer from one year to the next.
c. Create a micro-loan program for pastors so that they might be apply for a start up funds in order to begin a small business to provide an income for their families.
d. Begin a literacy program for women in Malawi. We will be asking women’s book groups in America to sponsor a group of Malawian women to learn basic math and literacy skills while the American women enjoy reading together.
